What is anxiety?
Anxiety is a physiological state causing feelings of fear, apprehension and worry. These feelings are as common as happiness and joy. Studies are suggesting anxiety is a protective mechanism. It could be our body’s way of warning us against participation in potentially harmful situations.
Basically what happens is our minds perceive danger. This may be real or imagined. Our body reacts to this threat by preparing for action. Heart rate and blood pressure rise to increase the blood flow to the major muscle groups. Sweating is increased to help maintain body temperature. When the threat is only imagined, these bodily functions lead to the common, unpleasant physical symptoms of anxiety. These include heart palpitations, shortness of breath, sweating, trembling, nausea and chills.
Sigmund Freud said anxiety was a signal of danger which results in physical defensive behaviors. These defensive behaviors are meant to enable our bodies to overcome whatever danger is threatening us. He believed we get these anxious feelings from traumatic experiences, and then reinforce the feelings through classical conditioning.
When we see or feel something we associate with a previous traumatic experience, we feel a resurgence of the anxiety these situations caused. Emotionally, we feel a sense of panic or extreme dread. Voluntary and involuntary behavior urges us to escape. But if we just avoid or run away from these situations without dealing with the anxiety, we reinforce this urge to escape. This just results in even more anxious feelings the next time this situation is encountered.
Five Quick and Easy Fitness Toning Exercises
There is no doubt that exercise is one of the most important things we can do for ourselves. Not only does it increase our life expectancy, but weight bearing exercises also increase muscle mass and bone density as we age.
Most of us know what to do when it comes to exercising our bodies. The problem for most people is simply finding the time and space within their busy lifestyles to take the time for oneself.
Weight bearing exercises aren’t just for bodybuilders. As you age, especially once you hit the age of forty, you begin to lose muscle mass. For women especially, bone loss becomes a problem with problematic diseases such as osteoporosis making themselves known. When the body is in need of calcium it can rob it from your bones. But building muscle not only increases their mass but your strength.
Here are five easy toning exercises that can be done anywhere and whenever you have time. At home, at the office, or on vacation, you can do these easy yet extremely effective exercises.
1. The Bridge Butt Lift – Sounds like a building site technique but it’s actually a great and easy way to tone your buttocks. Lay down with feet flat on the floor, legs shoulder width apart. Place your hands, palm side down, on either side of your body. Use your feet to push, squeeze your gluteal muscles, then lift your butt up off the floor. Hold the position for a count of five to ten, then release back down to the floor.
2. Squats – Squats are excellent for working the butt, the hamstring muscles and the quadriceps. It’s helpful for this exercise to use a chair to help your form. Stand with your feet shoulder width apart and your feet firmly planted. Then push your butt back as if you were preparing to sit down on a chair. Remember to keep your abs tight and your upper body straight. Once you reach chair level, stop and hold the position for a count of two to five, then release. A good tip for this exercise is to place all of your weight on your heels when you’re at the lowest point for balance and maximum toning.
3. Reverse Leg Lunges – Lunges work the quadriceps muscles. They can be hard for people with knee problems so be careful and don’t push it if you’re feeling pain. A reverse lunge will still tone the right muscle groups but put less pressure on your knee. Stand with your feet together and arms at your sides. Then take one leg and move it backwards until you are in lunge position: front leg bent at a 90 degree angle and uour back leg extended until you are on the ball of your foot. From this position lower yourself down until the back knee almost touches the floor. Hold for a count of two and return to starting position.
4. Pushups – This classic toning exercise works all areas of the arms plus the chest muscles. Don’t worry if you aren’t strong enough to perform a pushup on your toes, just lower your body to your knees and work out that way. But be sure your arms are tucked into your body and your back is straight, then lower and lift your body.
5. Stomach Crunches – Abdominal muscles can be worked every day to build strength and muscle tone. Lying on the floor in sit up position, lace your fingers behind your head. Squeezing your abdominal muscles, lift your upper body until your lower back is about to come off the floor. Hold for two to five counts and return to starting position.
So there you go! These five exercise moves don’t take up much room or need expensive equipment, and they also can be done whenever you have time. The best thing about exercise is that its effects are cumulative. Even five or ten minutes at a time will work to your advantage and you’ll soon feel and look better. What are you waiting for?

Joint pain can be caused by any number of things. It can be the result of an injury or overuse of the joint. If your joint pain is caused by arthritis, you will need to begin your search for an effective way to treat it. But, in order to do that, you need to know the symptoms of arthritis. All forms of arthritis share the common symptoms of severe pain, loss of range of motion, and a diminished quality of life. What you will find is that this painful, life altering condition can be found in any individual at any time of their lives. But, there are joint pain treatments that can be effective.
The first thing to do when you have joint pain is to go to a doctor. Symptoms of arthritis include severe pain in the joints and other factors as mentioned above. If your pain is accompanied with fever, the advice of a doctor is urgent because this specific type of arthritis can be deadly. Arthritis can be brought on by any number of things including overuse of the joint, sports, injury, and degeneration of the joints through time. In any case, it is important to relay to your doctor when it was first noticed, any related injuries you may have had, and what types of activities you perform on a regular basis. Your doctor will determine if the pain is arthritis through x-rays and blood tests. Once the doctor knows which type you have, treatments can begin.
For instance, the joint pain caused by rheumatoid arthritis is a function of the immune system destroying the cartilage in the joints affected. Cartilage is what keeps the bones from grinding against each other. As your immune system eats away at your joint cartilage, pain is brought on by the formation of nerve endings in the affected area. Eventually, the pain is so sever that mobility in those joints is virtually impossible.
But, again, there are treatments that can help or reverse the damage and pain. Your doctor can lead your treatment and some things you might expect could include surgery, pain medication, physical therapy, and even loss of use of the joint. But, there are other forms of medication as well. In fact, one of the most beneficial medications is a simple natural food supplement that is not even medicine at all. It is a natural treatment that is called collagen type II. When taken, this product can stop the pain by stopping the immune system’s battle against your joints. It can then help to repair damage. In some cases, patients saw results within days, in others it took up to a few months. There are no known side effects of this treatment.
No matter what your joint pain is caused from or how you will treat it, the most important thing to remember is that you can find treatment. You can find it in a number of ways, which gives everyone a solution to try. Joint pain can effectively change and ruin your life if you let it. Or, you can fight back and regain your body’s well being.

What are Glucosamine and Chondroitin Sulfate?

Glucosamine and chondroitin sulfate are substances found naturally in the body. Glucosamine is a form of amino sugar that is believed to play a role in cartilage formation and repair. Chondroitin sulfate is part of a large protein molecule (proteoglycan) that gives cartilage elasticity.
Both glucosamine and chondroitin sulfate are sold as dietary or nutritional supplements. They are extracted from animal tissue: glucosamine from crab, lobster or shrimp shells; and chondroitin sulfate from animal cartilage, such as tracheas or shark cartilage.
What do they do?
Past studies show that some people with mild to moderate osteoarthritis (OA) taking either glucosamine or chondroitin sulfate reported pain relief at a level similar to that of nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) such as aspirin and ibuprofen. Some research indicates that the supplements might also slow cartilage damage in people with OA. Definitive results about the effects of these supplements are expected from an in-depth clinical study currently being conducted by the National Institutes of Health.

Arthritis Treatments

Arthritis Treatment Overview
We use this title because not all arthritis treatment is, shall we say, enjoyable. If you suffer from the painful effects of this debilitating condition though, very little can seem worse. The pain is often so severe that the simplest movements can cause anguish and even tears. But, there are treatments to help arthritis. Can they cure it? That is still to be seen, but many have shown to be effective in fighting off the pain. First, there are many different types of arthritis. The causes of each will help to determine the treatment. But, here, we will talk mainly of the treatment options available and then those that are quite possibly the best at treating rheumatoid arthritis.
The symptoms of any arthritis start with pain. There is pain in the joints in a way that limits the amount of movement a person has. Now, remember, as well, that arthritis can strike any individual, not necessarily just older people. So, if a child stops using a limb complaining of pain, a doctor should be seen. On top of this, if symptoms of pain are accompanied with fever a doctor should be seen immediately as this can be a sign of a deadlier arthritis known as septic arthritis. In all cases, arthritis is an inflammation in the joints. The problem in rheumatoid arthritis is that, in trying to deal with the inflammation, the immune system ends up attacking the cartilage in the joints. The end result is pain and lessened use of the effected joint.
In order to stop this process, arthritis treatments can be anything from surgery to medications. There are some good notes about medications, but in the end, they can not resolve the entire problem, only mask the pain for a while. Surgery is invasive and costly. Physical treatment is available and has shown good progress in helping some patients. There are also herbal remedies that have shown good signs of helping as well. There is one product that we would like to mention in a little more detail. What is so unique about this product, though, is that it is a natural treatment that can be taken.
In the treatment of rheumatoid arthritis in particular, collagen type II can be just as good as a cure to some individuals. This natural substance is actually a main component of cartilage itself. But, no injections are needed because this is an oral treatment. You will take a pill, in other words. There are many reasons why this medication works including the fact that it has an absorption rate of 70 to 90 percent. This means more of it is used and fewer doses are needed. There are other reasons why it works so well.
For instance, the immune system has a component of cells in the intestine called the GALT. This is where proteins are recognized as food or “friend” and therefore not treated as allergies or sensitivities by the digestive system. When collagen type II is ingested, the GALT recognizes this amino acid as a friendly protein. This action switches off the immune system’s attack on collagen elsewhere in the body as in arthritic joints. Instead of the immune system fighting the inflammation and destroying the remaining good material, the Galt simply tells it to stop. And, probably the most important aspect of this natural arthritis treatment is that it can also help to rebuild the damaged and destroyed cartilage. The combination of these two factors can help to restore a normal way of life.

Gout, which is also a kind of arthritis, can cause a lot of joint pains. This is because uric acid crystals are deposited in the joints usually in the arms and legs. Persistent joint pains caused by gout can lead to osteoarthritis. Osteoarthritis, often called the degenerative joint disease, is the most common type of arthritis that causes joint pains. When these cartilages and ligaments wear out, they cause the pain.
The second common condition that results to joint pain is rheumatoid arthritis. Joint pains are result of inflammation in the joints on both sides of the body. It is believed by researchers that this kind of arthritis is caused by external organism like a virus or bacteria that attacks the joints.
Thirdly, polymyalgia rheumatica (PMR) and temporal arteritis (TA) also affects the joints. Tips For Improving Bone And Joint Health
June 6, 2009 by admin
In the United States, one in three adults suffer from some form of chronic joint pain. Most of these joint pain problems can be reduced or avoided completely with just some basic changes in our everday lifestyles. This article is designed to give you tips and advice that can help.
1. Lose weight – Carrying around extra body weight creates severe strains on your joints, particularly the knee joints. You can drastically reduce the amount of pain you feel in those joints by simply losing weight. In fact, losing as little as ten pounds of body weight can help improve the joint pain problems almost immediately.
2. Stretch first – If you exercise a lot, and particularly if you work hard to build muscle, you need to be sure you stretch first. Many bodybuilding and weight lifting related joint pain problems are caused by tendonitis, which is an inflamation or irritation of the tendons. This type of joint pain can be reduced or eliminated by stretching, because you’ll warm up your tendons before working them too hard, and they’ll be more flexible and able to handle the added weight or exercise loads you’re putting on them.
3. Warm Up – This tip also applies to anyone who exercises or lifts weights regularly. Your body needs to be warmed up properly in order to work properly and avoid excess injuries. Warming up allows your tendons to flex and become more supple, allows the muscles to loosen up and work better, and gets the blood flowing through your body.
4. Change Exercises – Whether you’re an advid or occasional exerciser, you might want to consider changing the type of exercise you do. Impact style exercising such as step aerobics or kick boxing is much harder on your joints, and can cause a lot more pain and problems. Change to exercises such as yoga and water based workouts to take the load off your joints and help prevent more pain problems.
5. Don’t over exercise – Regardless of the type of exercise you do, or how heavy your workout is, your body needs time to repair. Someone who does hours of intense exercising daily will have more problems with chronic joint pain than someone who allows their body to recuperate. Your muscles, tendons and ligaments all need time to rest and repair after a hard workout. That’s what causes them to strengthen over time.
6. Change Positions – Even if you don’t workout, your job or daily routines could be the cause of chronic joint pain. Sitting or standing all day are examples of routines that can cause joint pain. Try to vary your routine a bit, to give both your body and your joints variety and rest periods.
7. Get Better Shoes – Women who wear high heeled shoes have 7-10 times greater chances of developing joint pain and problems. If you’re in love with super high heeled shoes, at least try to vary the height regularly. Wear one inch heels for a day, then two inch heels another day and so on. It’s best if you simply stick to heels lower than three inches though.
Likewise, if you wear tennis other other types of shoes, you need to make sure they fit properly. Your toes should not be cramped, and there should be the proper amount of arch support. Your shoes should also have some sort of cushion, particularly under the ball and heel areas of your feet.
8. Get Your Supplements – Making sure you’re getting enough of the required vitamins, minerals and supplements is one of the best ways to help reduce, eliminate, and even prevent chronic joint pain. Calcium is important to keep your bones strong, and strong bones keep your joints healthy. You also need plenty of vitamin C and anti-oxidents. Fish oil and flax oil provide omega-3 fatty acids, which work wonders for keeping your joints in optimum health, and glucosamine helps improve joint flexibility, as well as helping to rebuild joint cartilage.

Three Ways to Improve your Fitness Levels
Many people want to improve their physical fitness levels. However, they often make the excuses that they don’t know how or they don’t have the time. In this article I outline three ways you can implement fitness training into your daily routine.
1) LIFESTYLE CHANGE:- One of the easiest ways to improve your current fitness levels is to make small, positive changes to your daily routine. Specifically, you need to improve your diet and your exercise routine. As I have mentioned, these changes do not have to be large. If you make small changes to your lifestyle at regular intervals these will soon build up to become large changes which yield significant results.
One way you could change your eating habits is by eating one less takeaway a week and substituting this for a healthier, home cooked meal. Then in the second week you could build on this by eating a salad for lunch once or twice a week. You can alter your exercise habits in a similar way. In the first week use stairs instead of elevators. In week two participate in a thirty minute brisk walk twice a week. As you can see these small but positive lifestyle changes collectively become significant changes which can lead to improved fitness levels.
2) FITNESS EQUIPMENT:- Another great way to improve your fitness levels is to take advantage of the large selection of fitness equipment on the market. When choosing fitness equipment you first have to decide what your fitness targets are. Do you want to improve your cardiovascular fitness? If so then a treadmill, rowing machine or exercise bike will be most suitable for you. Do you want to tone and strengthen your muscles? Then free weights and weight machines are what you should be using.
You also need to consider whether you want to purchase the fitness equipment for yourself or take advantage of the fitness equipment at the gym. Both have their own distinct advantages and disadvantages. Owning your own fitness equipment means that you can use it whenever you want, within the comfort of your own home. However, unless you have a lot of storage space and money you will be unable to purchase the range of equipment that a gym can provide. The gym can provide you with a large range of equipment for a relatively low cost. However, when the gym is full you will have to wait for machines and you will also have to spend time commuting to and from the gym.
Whatever you choose regarding your fitness equipment you must consider one important factor. Fitness equipment will assist you in your exercise but it will not do it for you. You still have to put in the time and effort that leads to improved fitness levels.
3) FITNESS TRAINER:- Taking advantage of a fitness trainer is a great way to improve your fitness levels. You can explain your fitness goals to the trainer and then they can show you the best way to achieve them. A fitness trainer should also help you stay motivated, show you where you are going wrong and lead you down the right path, making it more likely that you will achieve your targets.
When choosing a fitness trainer there are a number of factors you should consider. A good fitness trainer should be able to provide success stories from their past which prove their credentials. You should also look at their qualifications to measure how well trained they are. Finally, you should arrange a meeting with a number of fitness trainers and see which ones match your personality.
As you can see there are plenty of options available to you if you want to improve your fitness levels. Although I have given you the advice you have to take that first step and implement fitness training into your daily routine. Choose whichever ideas you think are best for you and get started. The sooner you begin to take action, the sooner you will start to see results.
